Driving Around Flyover Country

What is Driving Around Flyover Country?

Driving Around Flyover Country is a multimedia interview project telling stories about people across the Midwest. The Midwest, which begins as far east as Ohio and stretches west to North Dakota, is a diverse place with a culture all its own. Ever heard of Midwest nice? It’s not a myth, I swear.

In a series of trips through 12 states over the next year or more, I will share more of what’s happening in the places people often bypass. What makes them tick? What makes them concerned? What makes them excited about the future? I believe that by understanding the heart and soul of America’s Heartland, we will better understand the current of change happening in the United States today.

It’s a lot more than cornfields out here. So stick around – you may be surprised by what I find.

How does the project work?

Driving Around Flyover Country is an evolving project. I’m so glad you’re here to watch it grow!

To begin, I will be providing long-form updates in a weekly (and sometimes more than weekly!) Substack newsletter. Substack is essentially a mix between a blog and a newsletter – all in one platform. You can view it all on your phone or desktop here, or you can subscribe to get updates straight to your inbox. While some ask for donations via Substack subscriptions, Driving Around Flyover Country is currently available for free.

If you are a more visual person, I will be posting photos and short-form videos of my experiences and observations on Instagram and TikTok. This casual way to connect takes you along with me as I see what lies beyond the cornfields across the Midwest.

As for the future, I will be launching a podcast season in early Spring 2023. Stay tuned for updates about the launch date and season promos – there’s a lot in store in the months to come!

Follow along with the project as I explore the Midwest!

I write about my observations and experiences in a weekly Substack newsletter. (It’s free!) If you’re more visual, I also post about the project on Instagram and TikTok.
